Introducing Rugby-Sevens  2007 Rugby Sevens Review

The Thanet Wanderers Rugby Club host the Annual Rugby-Sevens on their Broadstairs playing fields. This has become something of a tradition and is looked forward to every year by players and viewers alike.

An introduction to the Rugby-Sevens

The teams come from the length and breadth of the country and are made up from a mixture of happy amateurs (with a death wish!) and hardened egg-chasers (who just like hitting each other!). Local businesses put together 7-a-side teams consisting of their fittest and meanest staff members, by fair means or foul, and dressed in a startling array of costumes. The playing fields resemble more of a carnival than sporting arena. Each team has its own unique strip with some taking it to extremes – no it’s NOT fancy dress, it’s just an eccentric’s day out. Friends and families come to watch their loved ones get beaten to a pulp – it’s all good fun!

A Review of the 2007 Rugby Sevens (or unleash the lions, here’s the Christian!)

The Rugby Sevens this year was probably the biggest and best yet with 32 teams entering. The sun was shining, the beer was flowing and the crowds were looking forward to a sporting treat (poor disillusioned fools!).

Rumour has it that eventual winners, Royal Temple Yacht Club, put huge incentives in place in order to encourage players to perform for them…! By all accounts an England–A international was on show!

Miles and Barr (‘Mashed and Bashed’) resorted to the tried and tested incentive of “play for us, you will have a great time and we’ll buy you a beer!”

In saying that, it was our most successful campaign ever reaching the semi-finals of the competition and taking out a couple of proper Rugby teams en route. Some great performances by Simon ‘Popsy’ Thompson, Scott ‘the chin’ Roberts, Nick ‘where’s the line’ Chambers and of course a legend in his own lifetime ‘I.T’ Mike. I myself took the role of cameo performance very seriously and still dispute the referees decision to disallow my 60 yard (well maybe 6 yard) dash for the corner which ended up being tackled by a fierce some looking chap and being thrown onto a nice soft landing of Carlsberg beer bottles.

Well the grass-burns, bumps and grazes are all getting better now and yes, this time next year we’ll be…Champions!
